Paris Olympics 2024 saw one of the biggest upsets till now as World Champion Nikhat Zareen was knocked out by Asian Games Gold Medalist Wu Yu. The Chinese completely dominated the Indian champion in a one-sided affair.
It was a shock for both Nikhat and the Indian fans who were hopeful for Nikhat to win at least a medal. But Wu Yu, who was playing her first match dominated Nikhat who was unseeded.
It is rare when you see that a World Champion is not seeded but continental champions are. This happened because the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which is holding the boxing competition, doesn't recognize the International Boxing Association (IBA), which conducts the world championship.
Paris Olympics 2024: 'I Am Sorry'
Nikhat was heartbroken after the loss and asked for forgiveness from all the fans. She stated "Sorry guys. t was a learning experience for me. I had not played her before. She was faster. I will analyze this bout once I am home. I was unseeded and this wasn't my first match, she was playing her first, and it also impacted me. It was an intense bout."
She further stated "I had worked hard, prepared myself physically and mentally for this Olympics. I will come back strong."
Furious Fans
Not only Niklhat but almost every Indian boxer was given challenging draws. But we can't use this as an excuse because you have to beat these top players sooner rather than later.
But facing these tough challenges while playing more matches than them puts a lot of pressure on the athlete. Indian fans were left furious over this seeding system as they thought this match was worthy of a final or semi-final bout.
Indian fans not only have issues with the seeding but also the fixtures as the badminton fixtures resulted in two Indians, Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy facing each other in Pre-QF.
